Biloxi MS, Year
Founded in 1944, the Biloxi NAACP works to protect and rebuild East Biloxi, a mostly Black neighborhood hit hard by Hurricane Katrina and long neglect. Rebuilding has been slow due to high insurance and strict building codes. The group is turning empty lots into green spaces to fight flooding and preserve Black history, aiming to help the neighborhood recover and thrive. Rory Doyle is a documentary photographer in Cleveland, Mississippi, whose work focuses on the Delta and the South. A 2024 Pulitzer finalist, his photography has appeared in The New York Times, Smithsonian, and ProPublica.
